1) How does the Microcontroller (U1) socket oriented?
The cornered piece of the socket is closest to the crystal (Xtal). Pin one faces the same side of the board as connector DB9. View Board
2) Where's pin 1 on U5 (the 5 volt regulator)?
Pin 1 is located closest to Ctr3. Pin 1 is the 12 v input from the power adaptor.
